VIC7076 - Dissertation

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Design and deliver a research project that will generate new insights or pose new questions in a particular area of Victorian studies
Demonstrate critical awareness and understanding of the significant primary and secondary material relevant to this project
Judge the relative merits and impact of competing scholarly interpretations produced on the chosen topic
Present research findings in a clear and structured manner, using the given style for references and bibliography

Content:

This module gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and insights you have gained in the taught modules to a specific, clearly identified topic; and to make an independent contribution either to the knowledge of your topic or to its interpretation. Supported by one-to-one supervision, you will devise and research the project, and present it in a sustained, 12,000-word piece of scholarly writing. You will also be supported in your learning by two group workshops and an advanced study-skills day-school.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Individual supervision, to include: discussions to set up the project (2 hours); research support (1 hour); discussion of draft and revisions (3 hours). Supervision will take place through a combination of different methods (e.g. face-to-face discussions, e-mail consultations, telephone conversations) as appropriate to the student and the project.

The group sessions, which might take the form of Saturday day-schools, will help you develop advanced study skills and provide an opportunity for all students currently engaged in writing dissertations to give presentations of their proposed topics for peer discussion and feedback, facilitated by tutor(s).

Further details relating to assessment
At the start of Semester 2, you will produce a research proposal. This is not assessed but the feedback you receive for this will enable you to gauge your progress on the module and ensure that the project you are working on is viable and appropriate for Level 7.
