TRS6922 - Religions in Leeds Bradford

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate theoretical and methodological approaches to studying religions on location.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of at least two religions represented locally, with respect to their origins, developments and global links.
Develop social and religious sensitivity through interaction with religious practitioners and sites.
Conduct research into local religions employing fieldwork methods and using a variety of on-line and print resources.

Content:

This module will be based around site visits to local religions in Leeds and Bradford or within the region. Class time will focus on methodological approaches to researching religions on location, theories of religion, culture and geography, and characteristics of local religious traditions. For the Report, students choose their own site visit, including approaching the group and making arrangements for the visit.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be taught in plenary sessions which will make use of a blend of teaching and learning methods. These will normally include: lecture-style presentations by the tutor, seminar-style discussion of a particular topic, informal prepared presentations by students and other methods as appropriate. There will also be at least two organised site visits and one the students chooses to do themselves. Guidance on research and fieldwork methods will be embedded in the learning and teaching process throughout the module.

The Portfolio includes analyses of class site visits and engagement with theories and methods. The Report is based on the student's own site visit and includes a reflective element.

Students may also negotiate their assessment topic with the lecturer.
