SOC6063 - Organised Crime

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module aims to explore how police, partner agencies and government bodies combat the complex world of organised crime. This form of crime transcends regional, national and international boundaries. The prevention and detection of these often-clandestine crimes challenge law enforcement and government bodies and require effective cooperation, partnership working and co-operative strategic and tactical planning.

The exchange of illicit goods such as weapons, drugs, and stolen property will be explored as will unlawful services based around the exploitation of people such as Human trafficking and Modern- Day Slavery. The infiltration of governments and businesses through fraud, corruption and money laundering will be scrutinised. These types of crimes often exploit the sophisticated use of technology and the internet to facilitate their activities and these relationships will be deliberated.

Corporate crimes vary in complexity and scope and these issues will be examined, as will the challenges faced with tackling these types of corruption. Crimes such as fraud, tax evasion, insider trading and manipulation of accounts will be deliberated as will issues such as breaches of environmental and Health and Safety legislation.

Further Information Relating to Assessment

Formative assessment will take place in taught sessions and Seminars through the use of summary questions to check the development of understanding as well as groups tasks and discussions using online tools and traditional methods such as flip charts and informal presentations. Assessments will take place through a combination of methods that will include a paired podcast on a negotiated topic which is built to enhance students’ abilities in conceptualising ideas in conversations, as well as digital skills. At the end of the module a 60 minute online quiz will take place to ensure consolidation of information from lectures.

Assessment tasks are designed to measure the extent to which you have satisfied the Level Learning Outcomes for your programme. Some modules, for example where there are professional body (PSRB) requirements, will also test for module-specific skills and knowledge.
