SOC6055 - Criminalised Women

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module explores the lives and experiences of criminalised women, often a marginalised and unheard demographic of the criminal justice system. With a growing body of work, underpinned by feminist thought, aiming to recognise the gendered experiences and challenges of criminalised women this module aims to unpick these and offer a space to develop critical thought and challenge the patriarchal and neo-liberal agendas within society.

The module will discuss the intersecting layers of system failure, marginalisation and stigma which saturate women’s experiences, alongside the gendered stereotypes the women face. It will look to consider what can influence both women’s offending and desistance from crime, drawing upon research, policy and practice.

Further Information Relating to Assessment
Zine and 2000 word commentary: This will involve the completion of a one page Zine, offering a creative way for students to express their ideas and understanding of a chosen topic area. The Zine will be supported by a 2000 word commentary to explain their thinking, and link with academic research, theoretical exploration, and wider policy, where and if relevant. This will follow standard marking criteria for a level 6 essay, with a pass mark of 40. No ethical approval is required. To support student understanding one of the workshops will be dedicated to Zine making.

Assessment tasks are designed to measure the extent to which you have satisfied the Level Learning Outcomes for your programme. Some modules, for example where there are professional body (PSRB) requirements, will also test for module-specific skills and knowledge.

Students will be referred to the Module Handbook, and supporting assessment briefs for full details of each assessment component attached to the module. They also have available a 30 minute tutorial each semester, alongside office hours, when required. Students will also be encouraged to interact with the module padlet/forum to ask assessment related questions.

In addition, negotiated assessment can be included within the module and when included it will satisfy the relevant Level Learning Outcomes in the same way as named assessments.

Assessment:

001 Zine; 1 page plus 2,000 words; end of semester 2 100%
