SOC5063 - Tackling Crime and Policing Issues

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module aims to explore how police and partner agencies prevent and detect crime and disorder in an ever-changing fast-paced society. Contemporary policing issues will be examined and tactical and strategic interventions will be discussed. In addition community relationships will be extrapolated and students will be encouraged to widen their thinking on how crime is targeted and resolved. Investigating crime issues such as sexual exploitation, domestic violence, drug abuse and inquisitive crime will be debated, as will modern trends in criminal behaviours such as cyber crime. Other contemporary issues will be examined such as radicalisation, terrorism and improving trust and confidence in communities.

Further details relating to assessment
Formative assessment will take place in taught sessions and Seminars through the use of summary questions to check the development of understanding as well as groups tasks and discussions using online tools and traditional methods such as flip charts. Assessments will take place through a combination of methods that will include; group presentations on a predefined topic and a written review of a policing issue or historical policing event. There will also be a review of a critical incident that can be completed during both semesters on a current policing issue and students can use various formats such as journal or blog formats.
