SHN7063 - The Healthy Environment

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Understand the range of ways in which the physical, social, and political environment affects an individual’s health.
Evaluate the effectiveness of health interventions that utilise a socio ecological approach.
Critically evaluate research which examines the relationship between an individual’s health and the environment.
Summarise and communicate research findings for different audiences.

Content:

Students appraise a range of ways in which the physical, social, and political environment affects health. There will typically be a focus on physical activity promotion and interventions, but students can explore other related health topics. Central to the module is an exploration of socio ecological approaches to health promotion and behaviour change. Students will be challenged to critically evaluate research that examines the relationship between an individual’s health and the environment. As part of the assessment students will have the opportunity to develop their ability to summarise and disseminate research findings for different audiences.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is delivered online. The core module content will be delivered using asynchronous online tasks and activities. Student learning will be supported through completion of interactive forums and web- based individual and group tutorials.Formative feedback will be provided in forums and tutorials at timepoints which align with module delivery. Summative assessment will be completed at the mid- point and at the end of the module, with feedback provided for this work.

Further details relating to assessment
Component 1, Poster: You will be tasked with producing a poster summarising appropriate research exploring the relationship between the environment and an individual’ health. This can include but is not limited to the relationship between physical activity and the environment.

Component 2, Essay: This assessment task will see the students explore the layers of influence on an individual’s health using a socio ecological approach. In doing so students will have the opportunity to examine a health promotion intervention that considers the influence of the environment on an individual.

Students will be supported with the assessments in two 30-minute individual tutorials, one mid-semester and one end-of-semester.
