SHN7033 - Research Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Conduct analyses of quantitative and qualitative datasets.
Evaluate and appraise debates around relevant methodologies.
Evaluate the effectiveness of specific research methodology through analysis of a wide variety of peer reviewed journal studies.
Evaluate the ethical dilemmas in contemporary research in health and well-being.

Content:

This module is intended to help students develop their understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods, with a view to developing their practical skills and critical understanding in advance of the master’s dissertation module. Students are introduced to a diverse range of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, developing practical data analysis skills, as well as engaging with contemporary, critical debates surrounding research methodologies and ethical considerations.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered using a mixture of face-to-face introductory lectures, workshops, and online learning tasks which will include the delivery of web-based seminars at key stages of the modular delivery. Student learning will be supported and evaluated through completion of interactive forums, web-based seminars and individual and group tutorials.

Further details relating to assessment
For the first assessment, you will be provided with a large quantitative dataset and will be required to design your own research question, select appropriate variables, analyse the data accordingly and appraise other articles in this area of research. You will also be required to justify your choice of analysis in relation to the research question.

For the qualitative analysis, you will collect some qualitative data (from an online role-played peer scenario or via a pre-recorded source) and apply and justify a form of qualitative analysis to derive some meaning from the data. You will reflect on the challenges associated with this data analysis and processes, such as the associated ethical considerations.

Students will be supported with the assessments in two 30-minute individual tutorials, one mid-semester and one end-of-semester.

002 Qualitative analysis; 3,000 words; end of semester 2 50%
