SHN7023 - Leading and Managing Change in Health and Wellbeing

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Examine social and psychology concepts related to health and wellbeing, from a national and international perspective.
Critically appraise approaches to leading and managing change in health and wellbeing.
Evaluate policy and strategy used in relation to contemporary health and wellbeing issues.
Provide reflection on their position for leading and managing change in health and wellbeing.

Content:

This module will discuss policy agenda and strategies used in wellbeing. The module considers how individuals can work in organisations to lead and manage change. This will include concepts associated with preparing for change (consideration of the policy), implementing change (leading) and evaluating the change (sustaining the change that has been implemented). Sociology and psychology of health and wellbeing will be explored, taking into consideration a range of national and international perspectives. Various definitions of wellbeing, and social explanations for health inequalities based on social class, ethnicity, gender and age will be discussed. Students will reflect on their role in leading change and consider what skills are required.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is delivered online.Thecoremodulecontentwill be delivered using asynchronous online tasks and activities. Student learning will be supported through completion of interactive forumsandweb- basedindividual and group tutorials.Formative feedback will be provided in forums and tutorials at timepoints which align with module delivery. Summative assessmentwill be completed at the mid- point and at the end of the module, with feedback providedforthis work.

Component 1, Development Plan: This component of the module requires you to use a reflective model to provide a reflection on your current skills as an individual for leading and managing change in an organisation, taking policy into consideration. Following on from the refection you will write a development plan to demonstrate where you currently are, where you want to be and what you need to do to get there.

Component 2, Report: This component of the module requires you to identify a change model and discuss how you would lead change in an area of health and wellbeing at each of the stages of the model. You will critique the approaches taken and evaluate relevant policy and strategy that can be used.

Students will be supported with the assessments in two 30-minute individual tutorials, one mid-semester and one end-of-semester.
