SHN6312 - Management and Development of Sports Coaching

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Critically appraise UK sports policy.

Evaluate and compare the different frameworks and systems of sports coaching.

Critically evaluate the developmental needs of coaches.

Plan and apply coach development programmes thereby meeting the needs of others.


Content:

The module investigates and analyses the sports industry in the UK and the positon of coaching within this industry. The key policy and strategic documents that apply to the development of sport and coaching of sport is appraised. In particular the module aims to critque government policy on elite sport, community sport, social inclusion and also school sport.

Theoretical and conceptual frameworks that assist in evaluating and and explaining the role of sports coaching within a modern society are used in order to support the student in their appraisal of policy.

Students will evaluate the key needs of coaches from a developmental perspective focusing on technical, tactical, physiological, emotional and social needs of athletes / clients. Additionally they will develop their communication and delivery skills through applying their knowledge in a coach education workshop, leading a session for their peers.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lecture and workshops will be used to provide key information whilst provide the teaching and learning environment to discuss and debate issues and theories.
