SHN6282 - Community Sports Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Comprehend the role of various bodies in developing sport and apply to a community sport setting
Apply theoretical concepts to developing sport in a community setting
Design a sport development plan for a chosen community
Communicate the plan using methods suitable for an applied setting

Content:

Students will learn about the current structure for UK sport development and the bodies responsible for developing sport. Students will learn about current Sports Policy, agenda and the strategies adopted by various key bodies to develop sport in line with current policy. Students will learn how this compares with historical policies and strategies and with an international example. Students will focus on sport development in community settings. Sport development processes will be followed to propose a community sport development plan. Students will apply prior knowledge such as rationale for sports participation, barriers to participation, considerations of target groups, theories and models relating to participation, to proposing successful sports development plans in community settings. Students will liaise with key partners, conducting primary and secondary sources to inform their plans. Students will learn techniques of effective communication in real-life settings such as conducting professional meetings and writing documents such as reports for professional purposes.

In practicals students will participate in role-play practical activities to simulate 'real-world' experiences to gather information and communicate their plans.

Practical (oral group presentation) - Meeting proposal for sport development plan. The intended group size is 5. The presentation will outline the proposed sport development initiative and the action plan for the initiative, supported by current key sports policies and strategies and theoretically underpinned.

Report - Full sport development plan for initiative (individual).

Both assessments are transferable to 'real world' settings working in sport development.
