SHN6183 - Advanced Nutrition for Sport and Exercise

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The module explores the importance of nutrition and ergogenic aids for enhancing sport and exercise performance. Topics that will be covered focus on energy systems and metabolism, sports nutrition guidelines (use and interpretation), contemporary issues in sports nutrition, fluid balance and hydration, advanced dietary analysis, carbohydrate loading and fuel utilisation, and appetite responses to exercise. Studying such concepts allow you to gain a deeper understanding into key issues associated with applied sports nutrition practice. Students will critically engage with contemporary issues relating to the field of sports nutrition, and will apply this knowledge in the context of the assessment.

Component 1, Essay: The first component tasks students with comparing and contrasting the demands of competition for two different athletes. Students will be required to discuss macronutrients and hydration recommendations for one of these athletes based on appropriate evidence from relevant literature.

Component 2, Report: Students will be provided with an athlete case study and will be tasked with evaluating the suitability of the athletes dietary intake in relation competition and training. Students will also be tasked to critically evaluate the use of supplementation for performance enhancement.
