SHN6123 - Sports Therapy in Practice

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module builds on the assessment and treatment skills developed at Level 5 and shifts focus to the trunk and spine. You will develop safe and effective practice for the assessment and management (Maitlands vertebral mobilisations) of common injuries to the trunk and spine.

During this module you will also take an investigative approach and students will be required to apply critical thinking and clinical reasoning to determine the appropriate management of special populations commonly encountered in sports therapy practice.

Further details relating to assessment
Assessment 001 – Students must work in groups to produce a presentation that discusses the appropriate management of an athlete from one of the special populations covered in the module. The presentation should include a critical appraisal of the literature and will involve investigative group work.

Assessment 002 – The practical assessment will assess the student's ability to perform an assessment and treatment mobilisation of the spine. The assessment will also include the safe and effective practice of electrotherapy. Students must demonstrate safe and effective practice during this assessment to be able to pass the module.

The practical assessments will be split between the final weeks of Semester 1 and the examination week.

Formative Assessment – This will be ongoing throughout the module and include tutor and peer feedback and discussions. There will also be an opportunity for formative feedback on Assessment 001 prior to the hand in date and assessment unpacking preparation for Assessment 002 prior to the exam date.
