SHN6073 - Development of the Profession and the Professional

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The module investigates and analyses the sports industry in the UK and the positon of coaching within this industry. The key policy and strategic documents that apply to the development of sport and coaching of sport is appraised. In particular, the module aims to critique policy on elite sport, community sport, social inclusion and also school sport.

This module considers how contextual characteristics may influence and impact upon practice within sports coaching. This module looks at the environment within which coaching practice takes place, and how the complex interplay between coach, athlete, coaching programme and social context encourages coaches to develop an open and reflective approach to their own coaching practice.

Further details relating to assessment
Observation of coaching practice: Students must observe a minimum of 2 coaching session and submit a series of field notes documenting the observed elements of practice, critically referring to coach athlete interaction, and their learning from completing the observation.

Written Essay: Students will critically reflect on their developing coaching philosophy and how this aligns with a career in sport with recognition of the current UK sport landscape.
