SHN6053 - Performance Coaching

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will explore the specific demands of performance sport and how a sports coach can monitor these demands using appropriate technology. You will learn how recognising such demands allows appropriate long-term planning to develop athletes. There will be specific focus on the physiological demands of being an athlete, the monitoring of training load and the monitoring of readiness to train. You will develop suitable training programmes for performance athletes, consisting of micro, meso, and macro cycles which are grounded on relevant coaching principles and optimised based on the collection and interpretation of scientific data.

Case study: Students will choose a scenario and accompanying data set. Based on a needs assessment, students will construct a season long training programme tailored to the individual, based on the information provided. It should be presented in a manner that provides a clear overview of the training period as well as specific detail of training sessions to be carried out in the various sub-phases. The plan should include a rationale explaining the recommendations made.
