SHN6023 - Mental Health, Resilience and Recovery Across the Life-course

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will cover contemporary issues in mental health and wellbeing across the life-course. You will explore this through the lens of positive psychology applying strengths-based approaches focusing on interventions to support service users’ resilience and recovery. You will use health data to investigate the epidemiology of mental health problems across the life-course and critically analyse international, national and regional policy responses to service delivery focusing on public mental health and prevention. Case studies will be used to explore a range of key issues including assessment and care planning, risk management, cultural diversity, mental health literacy, mindfulness and how social determinants affect inequalities in mental health and wellbeing.

Further details relating to assessment
Post session activities submitted through Moodle will facilitate ongoing formative assessment opportunities via lecturer or peer feedback, these may include responses to case studies, quizzes, forum posts or blogs and self-assessment. One draft opportunity will be provided for each summative assessment with feedback provided at least one week prior to submission.

Case Study Report: You will select one case study from those covered in the module and report upon incidence and prevalence of mental ill health in this service user group, you will then consider causation relating to the social determinants of health and inequalities. You will then critically evaluate two policies and two positive psychology interventions, making sound judgement from research studies about the effectiveness of the policies and interventions in responding to the service user's mental health needs.

Oral Assessment: you will conduct a therapeutic session for 20 min using a positive psychology intervention to support a service user address a mental health issue from a strengths-based perspective. You will provide supporting notes for your preparation of the session (including the rationale for your choice of intervention and aims of the session) and a post session reflection evaluating your performance. You will work with a fellow Level 6 student who will role play the part of your service user, you will have the opportunity to brief your partner during a pre planning session to outline the focus of the session and your expectations of their input during the session.

The assessment tasks will allow you to demonstrate critical understanding and application of relevant health data, public health prevention and policy and positive psychology interventions.
