SHN5262 - Sport Psychology: Theory to Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify contemporary topics within sport psychology
Develop and deliver an educational sport psychology workshop for a specified target audience (i.e. athletes, coaches or practitioners)
Identify implications for sport psychology research and practice.

Content:

This module aims to show how research-based evidence can be applied in practical situations. This module places an emphasis on the application of sport psychology within a team setting and will look to explore contemporary research findings to challenge student perceptions of what sport psychology is and, importantly, what applied practice entails. In doing so, the module will build on students’ developing research skills to ensure that they are well positioned for this module and also for other areas of study.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Theoretical concepts are introduced in lectures, along with corresponding interactive activities within session.
Workshops focus on use of appropriate research approaches and ongoing assessment support, to help facilitate students' progress with their group-based research projects. They also provide an opportunity for presentations of project work to date for formative feedback (including peer feedback).

Further details relating to assessment
Students are required to deliver a 30-minute educational presentation in groups, designed for a specific target audience (i.e. athletes, coaches, parents or practitioners). Presentations should focus on one specific topic accounted for within this module that is relevant to the chosen target audience (e.g. a ‘leadership’ session designed for coaches or a ‘well-being’ session for athletes). It is expected that presentations will demonstrate a clear engagement with relevant theory and contemporary research, as well as providing corresponding implications and recommendations for good practice, and outlining any possibilities for further research. Given that these presentations are pre-recorded, it is also recommended that some editing processes are undertaken to ensure that they are professionally and appropriately formatted.
