SHN5243 - Therapeutic Modalities

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Analyse the benefits of therapeutic modalities;
2 - Explain physiological effects of peripheral mobilisations;
3 - Demonstrate safe application of peripheral joint mobilisations and justify treatment choices; and
4 - Demonstrate safe use of electrotherapy techniques.

Content:

This module will cover a range of treatment modalities (E.g. Thermotherapy, Taping, Electrotherapy) and their physiological effects. The concepts and theories surrounding peripheral mobilisations will be introduced and the application of peripheral mobilisations for treatment and management of peripheral pathologies.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module adopts a blended learning approach, combining interactive seminars and practical sessions in the sports therapy and rehabilitation environment to develop your theoretical understanding and practical competencies. The seminars will allow whole group contribution to include multiple viewpoints and perspectives. The practical sessions will be smaller groups where you will be encouraged to work with a range of your peers. They will include simulations to develop your ability to apply therapeutic modalities. There will also be guided independent study where you will consolidate your in-session learning.

Seminars
Hours: 20
Intended Group Size: Cohort

Practicals
Hours: 30
Intended Group Size: 18

Guided independent study
Hours: 250

Further Details Relating to Assessment

001 – Practical (Presentation)
This assessment must be passed (40%) for the module to be passed.
This assessment will require you to provide an analysis of the benefits of different therapeutic modalities. You will also be required to provide an overview of the concepts and theories surrounding the use of mobilisations, explaining the physiological effects on the body.

002 – Attendance
There is an 80% attendance requirement for this module, which aligns with the expectations of The Society of Sports Therapists (SST). Your attendance will be used to determine whether you will be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003), and thus could have implications for whether you can pass the module. Detailed below are the potential scenarios.

- 80-100% attendance (inclusive); You will be permitted to attempt the practical assessments (003).
- 50-79% attendance (inclusive); You may not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). You will only be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the second attempt assessment window if you attend mandatory catch-up sessions.
- 0-49% attendance (inclusive); You will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). Furthermore, it will not be possible to raise your attendance to a sufficient amount with catch-up sessions, therefore you will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the second attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). This will mean you will not pass the assessment (003) and will not pass the module.

003 – Practical (Peripheral Mobilisations and Electrotherapy)
This assessment must be passed (40%) for the module to be passed. Additionally, if you are unsafe at any point in this assessment then the maximum mark you can achieve is 35%.

This assessment will require you to demonstrate appropriate peripheral mobilisation techniques for two scenarios; one for a lower body peripheral joint and one for an upper body peripheral joint. In addition, you must justify your decisions about the mobilisations you chose to apply to the scenarios. You will also be required to demonstrate safe electrotherapy techniques for a scenario.

Please note that, as detailed above, assessments 001, 002 and 003 constitute a PSRB requirement (The Society of Sports Therapists) for 80% attendance and all theoretical and practical assessments on ‘sports therapy modules’ to be passed.
