SHN5103 - Applying Professional Skills in Sport, Exercise and Health

Content:

The aim of this module is to develop further your professional skills and to apply and reflect on these within a ‘professional’ placement. The module will provide you with some supporting content relevant to your programme of study (in Semester 1) that will further add capability to what you can achieve in the placement. This will include (as examples): developing your reflective practice skills, enhancing communication skills via a range of media, interdisciplinary working, and career guidance relating to Sport, Exercise and Health (incl. guest speaker inputs), as well as programme-specific content, placement searching and CV writing. The placement hours can be spread across the academic year or ‘blocked’, depending on your preferred professional area and/or the demands of your programme.

To further support the requirements of the Society of Sports Therapists in relation to placements, sports therapy students will participate in practical workshops covering sports trauma.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio will be made up of a range of tasks that include employment-generic components relevant to all students and components specific to the programme of study. Some tasks will be completed pre-placement, others post-placement, the precise make-up of these will be determined by the needs of the programme.

The assessment centre, facilitated by the Graduate Employment Team, will comprise tasks similar to those used in graduate recruitment (e.g. group work, interviews). The assessment centre half day will be delivered to cohorts of approximately 30 students (repeated as required depending on total module cohort size). The assessed component of the centre will comprise a group activity (approx. 6 students) lasting 40 minutes and a 10-minute individual presentation (selected from a range of titles).

The placement is expected to equate to approximately 6 weeks full-time in a professional setting. However, how these hours are distributed across the academic year is flexible and subject to agreement with the Module Coordinator (and is in part dependent on the requirements of the Programme of study). It shall not exceed 200 hours and should reflect the typical working hours expectations of the relevant vocation.

The portfolio will be made up of a range of components some of which will be specific to the programme of study. Core components will include reflections on the placement (at each of its stages: planning, conducting, evaluating) and a profiling of personal skills in relation to intended career options.

Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation students will be practically assessed on their safe and effective sports trauma skills (component 1).

There will be a requirement for evidencing negotiating and completing the placement (e.g., employer sign off, learning contract) - this will form a pass/fail element of the portfolio.

Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation students must pass the practical assessment component of the Portfolio (Assessment 001) to pass the module. It is a PSRB requirement that safe and effective sports trauma management is demonstrated.

All students must pass the Placement (Assessment 003) in order to pass the module overall in line with University requirements.
