SHN5055 - Research Methods and Enquiry

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module aims to introduce the skills needed to build and interpret research evidence in sport, exercise and related subject areas. You will be provided with knowledge and skills relating to: the value of research processes, ethical requirements, synthesis of existing research evidence, project design, as well as analysis and interpretation of data. You will develop a deeper understanding of, and ability to, appraise existing research thus allowing for you to excel in other modules across their programme. This module aims to facilitate greater success in the Independent Project module at Level 6 and as such will support the building of evidence bases for a range of project outputs.

Further details relating to assessment
Formative Assessment: Online tests/quizzes via Moodle to demonstrate engagement with, and understanding of, asynchronous content. Start and mid-semester.

Proposal: The proposal will require students to write up a project idea that has been formulated based on the key principles covered throughout the module. Staff-led or group projects will be available to students. The assessment builds upon the lecture content and the seminar content in which students are required to produce their project and research ideas which have been formulated and discussed within group seminar settings. Although the assessment is weighted as 100% at the end of the semester, through the seminar activities and online tests/quizzes students will have built up throughout the module both the knowledge and resources to complete this proposal.

Assessment:

001 Proposal; 2,000 words; end of semester 2 100%
