SHN5043 - Professional Skills and Research in Sport

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The aim of this integrated module is to develop further your professional skills and to apply and reflect on these within a ‘professional’ placement and to consider the merits of research in enhancing the discipline. The module will provide you with some supporting content relevant to your programme of study (in Semester 2) that will further add capability to what you can achieve in the placement. This will include (as examples): developing your reflective practice skills, enhancing communication skills via a range of media, interdisciplinary working, and career guidance relating to Sport, placement searching and CV writing.

In addition to the development of workplace skills, this module will cause you to develop an enquiring eye into the role of research in enhancing professional practices. Specifically, you will be introduced to theskills needed tobuild and interpretresearch evidencein sport coachingand related subject areas.Youwill be provided with knowledge and skills relatingto research processes, ethicalrequirements,project design, as well as analysisand interpretation ofdata. This module aims to facilitategreater successintheIndependent Project module at level 6and, as such will support the building of evidence bases for a range of project outputs.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio will be made up of a range of tasks that include employment-generic components relevant to all students and components specific to the programme of study. Some tasks will be completed pre-placement (e.g. skills audit) others post-placement (e.g. reflection).

As part of the portfolio, students must provide evidence of completing the placement as agreed with the placement provider (where this may not be possible, students must agree a course of action with the Module Coordinator).

The placement is expected to equate to approximately 6 weeks full-time in a professional setting. However, how these hours are distributed across the academic year is flexible and subject to agreement with the Module Coordinator (and is in part dependent on the requirements of the Programme of study). It shall not exceed 200 hours and should reflect the typical working hours expectations of the relevant vocation.

There will be a requirement for evidencing negotiating and completing the placement (e.g., employer sign off, learning contract) - this will form a pass/fail element of the portfolio.

The research proposal will comprise a written research plan which would be feasible to conduct as a final year project.
