SHN4283 - Functional Anatomy and Peripheral Joint Assessment (Clinical)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Identify, palpate and describe the position and actions of the main musculoskeletal features of the lower limbs.

2 - Identify, palpate and describe the position and actions of the main musculoskeletal features of the upper limbs.

3 - Perform an effective objective assessment.

4 - Hypothesise a diagnosis based on objective assessment information.

Content:

Knowledge and an understanding of the anatomy of the human body underpins the work of a Sports Therapist. More specifically, a Sports Therapist must be able to accurately and effectively locate and palpate specific bony prominences, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Furthermore, a Sports Therapist must be able to understand how these structures combine to create and allow movement.

Assessment skills contribute to key competencies of a Sports Therapist. Detailed knowledge of aetiology, pathology and assessment is essential to successfully identify, treat and rehabilitate sports injuries.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module adopts a blended learning approach, combining interactive seminars and practical sessions in the sports therapy and rehabilitation environment to develop your theoretical understanding and practical competencies. The seminars will allow whole group contribution to include multiple viewpoints and perspectives. The practical sessions will be smaller groups where you will be encouraged to work with a range of your peers. They will include simulations to develop your ability to conduct objective assessments. There will also be guided independent study where you will consolidate your in-session learning.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

001 – Attendance

There is an 80% attendance requirement for this module, which aligns with the expectations of The Society of Sports Therapists (SST). Your attendance will be used to determine whether you will be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002 & 003), and thus could have implications for whether you can pass the module. Detailed below are the potential scenarios.

80-100% attendance (inclusive); You will be permitted to attempt the practical assessments (002 & 003).

50-79% attendance (inclusive); You may not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002 & 003) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). You will only be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002 & 003) in the second attempt assessment window if you attend mandatory catch-up sessions.

0-49% attendance (inclusive); You will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002 & 003) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). Furthermore, it will not be possible to raise your attendance to a sufficient amount with catch-up sessions, therefore you will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002 & 003) in the second attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). This will mean you will not pass the assessment (002 & 003) and will not pass the module.

002 – Practical (Lower Body)

This assessment must be passed (40%) for the module to be passed.

This assessment will require you to identify and palpate key musculoskeletal landmarks of the lower body on an anatomy skeleton and a human model and describe the actions of joints and muscles. Furthermore, you will be required to demonstrate an effective objective assessment of a lower body joint and hypothesise a diagnosis based on objective assessment findings.

003 – Practical (Upper Body)

This assessment must be passed (40%) for the module to be passed.

This assessment will require you to identify and palpate key musculoskeletal landmarks of the upper body on an anatomy skeleton and a human model and describe the actions of joints and muscles. Furthermore, you will be required to demonstrate an effective objective assessment of an upper body joint and hypothesise a diagnosis based on objective assessment findings.

Please note that all assessment components - 001, 002 and 003 - must be passed, in accordance with PSRB requirements (The Society of Sports Therapists) for 80% attendance and all practical assessments on ‘sports therapy modules’ to be passed.
