Content:

At the heart of this module are some of the introductory skills and knowledge required to plan, deliver, adapt and evaluate practical learning environments in the field of teaching in physical education or sport coaching. To do this we will cover theoretical areas of Stages of Learning, Fundamental Movement Skill development and physical literacy in young people, Risk Assessment for practical situations, Theories of Learning, Teaching points, Feedback skills, Skill development, group management and theories of behaviour management, practice styles and the reflective process for teachers. Throughout the module you will act as both teacher /coach and learner in the practical setting, and you will have chance to give and receive constructive feedback to and from staff and peers.

By the end of the module, you should have greater confidence in planning, delivering and evaluating safe and progressive learning encounters with young, developing learners.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching methods will include lectures, practical, workshops sessions, blended sessions and online learning. There will be designated contact sessions per week - these will be interactive with small group tasks embedded throughout. Post-delivery activities will reinforce the weekly content and will reflect the demands of the assignment.

The integration of these learning environments will facilitate dissemination of underpinning theory, group-based and student led learning and also the application of this learning within a teaching (practical) environment. The very strong emphasis on practical sessions will allow students to develop self and peer assessment awareness and develop pedagogical skills in preparation for potential future employment.

Limits to the size of the practical and workshop groups allows for individual attention from tutors as well as specific feedback on formative assessment opportunities.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
You will complete 2 formal pieces of assessment in this module and a number of formative pieces of assessment.

Each week in your practical session you will be asked to deliver a small practical element of the session having prepared this in the workshop earlier. You will receive formative feedback on each piece you complete which will help you work towards the final Practical and Presentation.

The practical assessment will take the form of a teaching exercise where an individual is taught a games skill and given opportunity to improve.

The negotiated assessment is a reflection on Learning and Performance which has taken place in the module and on your development as a teacher / instructor. You can negotiate with the tutor the mode that you wish submit this in.

Please see the Module Handbook for further details of the assessment tasks.
