SHN4073 - \ SHA 4073 Sociology and Psychology of Physical Education and Coaching

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module develops students' awareness and understanding of psychology and sociology within physical education and sports coaching leading to the psychosocial development of the individual. From a social perspective, students’ awareness and appreciation of others will be enhanced. This includes understanding and evaluating the role that physical education and coaching can play in fostering social equality and social inclusion. Students will investigate how psychology interacts with social constructs within physical education and coaching and how these impact upon performance and physical activity adherence. Example topics include motivation, confidence and self-efficacy. An introduction to qualitative research methods will also happen in this module.

This module also incorporates the Professional Development Block: employer challenges and optional Level 4 placement for the three year routes represented. It incorporates the Professional Development Block; employer challenges only for the 2 year Accelerated route.

Further details relating to assessment
Students will be given reading to do on a regular basis and formative tasks will be given based on the completion of the tasks. These weekly tasks will then help scaffold the assessment and enhance student learning during the module.

Component 003 for the 3 year (SHN4073) route will be completed after the University Professional Development Block after the Easter break. Students will have the chance to opt for which path they want to take during the course of the module. Guidance regarding the options will be included in the Module Handbook and supported by briefings at the beginning of Semester 2.

A pass in the Professional Challenge Project will be achieved through participation in key tasks throughout the project. A pass in the work placement will include input from the employer. During the Professional Challenge Project or Placement, students will complete a Reflective Statement outlining their learning from the project /placement.

Assessment Component 002 Professional Challenge Project / Work Placement must be passed in line with University regulations.

002 Professional challenge project or work placement; 20 or 50 hours; pass/fail; end of semester 2 %
003 Reflective statement; 1,500 words; end of semester 2 50%
