On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Describe how the biopsychosocial model supports holistic health and social care practice
Identify factors which support physical, psychological and social health and wellbeing
Describe and apply characteristics of professional practice in health and social care
Outline the fundamental principles, values and ethics required for safe, effective and compassionate care
Recognise the importance of safeguarding, personalised care, equality and diversity and effective communication when working in health and social care.
This module will introduce students to the concept of holistic care and how the study of human biology, psychology and sociology contributes to understanding how individuals, families and communities can achieve wellbeing and how barriers such as inequality and social injustice can affect positive health outcomes. Students will examine their own professional identify and the professional characteristics and values set out in codes of conduct, developing an understanding of key concepts such as duty of care, accountability and ethical implications. The importance of interventions including safeguarding, personalised care, equality and diversity and effective communication will be applied through case study examples to promote an appreciation of how inclusive practice is delivered in health and social care.
The module will consist of a series of interactive lectures and workshops. In the lectures the key topics will be explored and basic theories will be introduced. In the workshops, students will apply the knowledge gained in the lectures through application to relevant service user and carer case studies, also where possible with support from guest speakers from the health & social care sector.
The module will incorporate a range of interactive modes ranging from debates, to guided independent work, to paired and group work.
Learning will also take place online where students can access a range of resources on the VLE including using multiple choice activities to evaluate their own level of understanding.
Students are expected to conduct around 220 hours of independent study in reading, preparation for taught delivery and preparing assessment for submission.
