PSY6542 - Introduction to Clinical Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Discuss the aetiology and prevalence of common mental health diagnoses (e.g., depression, anxiety, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)
Critically evaluate the use of diagnostic classification systems used in Clinical Psychology
Identify and evaluate some of the current therapeutic interventions used for mental health disorders
Critically evaluate the scientific literature on a current trend in Clinical Psychology

Content:

Introduction to psychopathology, Clinical Psychology, and the work of clinical psychologists. Consideration of potential causes of mental ill-health framed within a lifespan approach. Overview of diagnostic systems and approaches to psychological distress and debates therein. Evaluation of the prevalence of mental ill-health among varying populations, for example, age, race, and culture. Consideration of potential barriers to treatment and interventions to overcome such barriers. Critical evaluation of interventions with attention on patient preference, cost and outcomes. Examination of the BPS Code of Ethics and Conduct and BPS activities related to social justice, equality, diversity and inclusion.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a combination of brief lectures supported by small group exercises, workshops, tutorials, research seminars and case studies. Contact time will be supported by resources displayed on the VLE. Students’ independent study will include individual development of a project based on their selected area of interest.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio will consist of evidence and tasks completed throughout the semester. This may include a negotiated assessment in the form of a poster/presentation on a topic of the student’s choice, summaries from group discussions, as well as a self-reflective diary and evaluation of current practice of the field of Clinical Psychology.
