PSY5312 - Mind and Brain

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge anPSY5312d critical understanding of cognitive and biological psychology as evidential disciplines;
Engage actively with theoretical and methodological debates and controversies in the above areas;
Demonstrate a critical approach to assessing arguments, evidence and perspectives;

Content:

Building on PSY4412 Cognition and the Brain, students will critically examine the ways in which cognitive and bio psychology employ different methods of enquiry and develop different theoretical explanations of psychological phenomena, including neurological and psychological disorders. Indicative content includes cognitive and biological studies of memory function, perception, thinking and language. Throughout the module, students will be encouraged to consider the inter-relationship between cognitive and biological processes, along with the role of mediating factors such as stress and emotion. Historical development, cultural considerations and international aspects will also be included throughout, in order to provide a balanced and broad examination of topic areas.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered on the basis of two two-hour sessions, which will incorporate lectures and activities such as workshops, discussions and problem-solving activities. These sessions will be linked to additional materials which students will use in their self-managed activities and their engagement with the VLE. The emphasis throughout will be on active learning, experiential exercises and problem solving. A key component of this module involves students developing their research and critical thinking skills via group work.
