POL6403 - Advanced Investigative Interviewing (PIP 2)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Critically evaluate the principles and models of advanced investigative interviewing in relation to evidential, ethical, and professional standards;
2 - Analyse complex case material and apply structured investigative strategies in planning and conducting interviews with suspects, victims, and witnesses; and,
3 - Demonstrate professional judgement and adaptability in the selection and application of interviewing techniques aligned with PIP 2 expectations.

Content:

This module focuses on the development and application of advanced investigative interviewing techniques, in line with Professionalising Investigation Programme Level 2 (PIP 2) standards. It prepares students to manage complex, sensitive, and high-risk interviews with professional rigour and legal compliance.

Topics include the following:

- Advanced interviewing models (e.g. PEACE, cognitive interviewing, conversation management)

- Preparation and planning for suspect, witness, and victim interviews in complex investigations

- Ethical considerations in high-stakes interviews, including safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, and consent

- Managing vulnerability, capacity, and special measures

- Interviewing techniques for inconsistent, deceptive, or resistant subjects

- Legal and procedural requirements including disclosure, evidential integrity, and recording practices

- Reflective practice and the development of professional confidence and credibility as an interviewer.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module combines theoretical input with applied, scenario-based learning to develop students' capability in managing complex investigative interviews. Lectures introduce key legal, ethical, and psychological models, while workshops and tutorials focus on application, reflection, and peer feedback.



Learning will take place through:

- Lectures providing structured input on legal standards, interviewing models, and professional expectations;
- Workshops using role-play and scenario-based interview practice;
- Group discussions and debriefs focused on real-world case examples and operational dilemmas;
- Tutorials offering support on planning, analysis, and reflective development; and,
- Independent study involving policy review, interview strategy design, and reflective analysis.
