On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Examine actions associated with serious and complex investigations;
2 - Analyse the impact of gangs, and organised crime;
3 - Apply specialist interview knowledge;
4 - Understand the role of a first responder to serious & complex crime; and,
5 - Understand the role of information and intelligence.
This module will enable students to understand this important area of policing – serious and organised crime. They will examine actions associated with serious and complex investigations and analyse the impact of gangs and organised crime in modern policing. They will assess the additional investigative actions that may be required in more complex investigations, and be able to apply guidance, process and specialist knowledge when conducting investigations and interviews.
They will examine the importance of information and intelligence and look at the importance of the role of a first responder to a serious or complex crime scene.

Case Study Scenario: Students will complete a 4-hr practical scenario which will simulate a serious & complex investigation and require the students to apply their knowledge of legislation and procedure.
Case File: Students will produce a case file from their practical scenario which will detail investigative actions and outcomes, which will be written in the same style as a court standard document.
Please note that the practical case study (01) must be passed to meet professional requirements. The module must be passed (minimum 40) as a requirement of the College of Policing and cannot be condoned for marginal failure.
