POL6004 - Research Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

conduct research to identify and understand an emerging issue or problem in a specific area of policing to support an ethically sound research question;

plan an intervention to tackle the identified issue/ problem;

present an evaluation of research on the identified issue/ problem and proposal for tackling it.

Content:

This module will allow students to conduct research about a police issue which is identified in the current National Policing Strategy. Students will choose a specific issue relevant to their chosen interest, which they will research using sound academic research methodology. Exploration of research options, sound research practices and appropriate presentation of the findings will be taught through workshops and one to one supervision creating a bespoke teaching element to this module.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught through 2 hr workshops and one to one supervision meetings, of which there will be ten allocated to each student over a period of 12 months. This will enable the student to ensure their research is relevant and appropriate to the problem, following accepted academic practice within the scope of an undergraduate degree. The presentation of the project will be in written form.

Further details relating to assessment
The research project is 8,000 words or equivalent and will be in an area of policing specific to and researched by the student, based on the National Policing Strategy, and emerging issues in contemporary policing.

Other information
The module must be passed (minimum 40) as a requirement of the College of Policing and cannot be condoned for marginal failure.
