POL4103 - Policing Overview

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module looks at the purpose of the police service and the responsibilities of those charged with delivering a professional service, particularly at constable level. Students will review the role of law enforcement agencies and will be able to understand the concept and principles of policing by consent.

The module will cover the structure of the police service and members of the service, paying attention to both police constable and investigatory roles. It will also cover police powers and how these powers are regulated. Students will grasp a clear understanding of how the police exercise police powers and procedures fairly and without bias.

Students will develop a clear understanding of national policing strategies and the role of external bodies to regulate policing, the importance of governance and data protection. They will examine and understand the purpose of reviews, instances of malpractice and misconduct and how this influences the future of policing.

Further details relating to assessment
Component 1: Written assignment: Students will complete a 1000-word assignment on why they have chosen investigation as a career path. Students will link this to their personal values, using the universal values mapping exercise.

Component 2: Written Assignment: Students will complete a 1000-word assignment on how police and other agencies work together professionally in a national context to solve current issues and develop strategies to deal with issues. This should incorporate an element of literature-based research. Students can pick from several themed issues or negotiate the title with their module lead.

Please note: For Professional Policing BA Hons (POL 4103) ONLY: The module must be passed (minimum 40) as a requirement of the College of Policing and cannot be condoned for marginal failure.
