PER5023 - Fieldwork in Religious Studies

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module is based around site visits to local religions and sites mainly in the Leeds and Bradford areas, though may include sites in the North of England accessible from Leeds Trinity campus. Class time will focus on theoretical (e.g. spatial, cultural, etc.) and methodological (e.g. ethnographic) approaches to researching religions on location, and specific local religious traditions and their cultural backgrounds, including history, adaptations and links with global communities.

In the first semester, there will be a couple of organised class visits to specific groups, such as Jamyang Leeds Buddhist Centre, and in the second semester you will be supported in researching and visiting a group of your own choice, either in person or by engaging with them online. In this way, you will gain an insight into “lived religion” and practice, how groups are represented, and a critical understanding of specific themes such as gender, authority, use of technology and other challenges groups face in contemporary society.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be taught in plenary sessions which will make use of a blend of teaching and learning methods. These will normally include lecture-style presentations by the tutor, seminar-style discussion of a particular topic, informal prepared presentations by students and other methods as appropriate. There will also be at least two organised site visits and one the students organise themselves. In some circumstances site visits may be replaced with virtual visits and guest speakers. Guidance on research and fieldwork methods will be embedded in the learning and teaching process throughout the module.

You will be taught using LTU’s multimodal approach to teaching. Your learning will be divided into three stages:

Preparation: You will be given clear tasks to support you in preparing for live, in-person teaching. This may include watching a short, pre-recorded lecture (or other open educational resource), reading a paper or text chapter, finding resources to discuss with your peers in class, reading and commenting on a paper or preparing other material for use in class. Your Module Tutor will give you information to help you understand why you are completing an activity and how this will be built on during live, in-person teaching.

Live: All your live, in-person teaching will be designed around active learning, providing you with valuable opportunities to build on preparation tasks and interact with staff and peers, as well as helping you to deepen your understanding, apply knowledge and surface any misunderstandings.

Post: Follow-up activities will include clear opportunities for you to check understanding and apply your learning to a new situation or context. These activities will also be a source of feedback for staff that will inform subsequent sessions.

The module also includes a formative assessment of an informal presentation on your chosen site visit prior to submission of the Report.
