PED6962 - School Based Training 3

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Routinely demonstrate, have a coherent and detailed knowledge of, and critically understand professional attributes within an educational setting in accordance with statutory guidance relating to professional standards;
Demonstrate conceptual knowledge of ways of facilitating children's learning and progress by independently leading a range of professional activities across the curriculum in order to demonstrate that they meet the current professional standards to teach in England;
Systematically, and critically reflect upon, and evaluate, their own practice to identify areas for future professional development as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

Content:

Students have SBT preparation sessions at the University that embed detailed knowledge and support their critical understanding of the professional attributes necessary within an educational setting; these are aligned to statutory guidance relating to professional standards. Students then complete 45 days in school where they teach up to 70% of teacher's timetable demonstrating a depth of understanding of current policies, National Priorities and best practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching consists of University lectures, independent study and group work. This is followed by 45 days of School-Based Training (SBT). During SBT students have the opportunity to plan, teach and assess pupils and take on wider professional responsibilities alongside the qualified teachers and reflect on their experiences and continual professional development. The skills developed would be as determined by capacity to meet the Teachers' Standards (2012) https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/teachers-standards. These consist of but are not limited to a competence to plan, teach and assess given areas of the curriculum in a professional environment. These are in line with ITE expectations for Level 6.

Further details relating to assessment
School mentors and class teachers use formative and summative assessment materials to report on the progress of students across the Teachers' Standards. The final Assessment Report and supporting evidence is forwarded to the University by the deadline provided for end of placement. Students must evidence the minimum requirement to be awarded an overall pass for the module. Link tutors support Mentors in their assessment role, moderating grades and quality assuring each setting.

Final assessment grades (3-1) against the Teachers' Standards will be made at the end of Semester 2. These will be informed by the assessment report and relevant evidence from SBT as well as other documentary evidence collated by students from University-based and school-based activity during Semester 2.

Other relevant matters
Any student who is insufficiently prepared for SBT, through lack of attendance at preparation sessions or lack of appropriate preparation for teaching will be referred to the Academic and Professional Misconduct Panel (or the equivalent). The outcome may result in a withdrawal from SBT and a fail mark recorded for this module.

In addition, schools reserve the right to withdraw any student from SBT who is acting unprofessionally, is insufficiently prepared and who is jeopardising the education and/or safety of the children. A fail mark will be recorded with reference to Part 2 of the Teachers' Standards subject to the outcome from the relevant Panel of Examiners.

Summative judgements are made against the Teachers' Standards.
