PED5842 - Developing Academic Enquiry

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Demonstrate an awareness of key aspects of ethical practice; (I4; E9)
2 - Demonstrate an understanding of national priorities for Early Years and Primary education, including curriculum developments and pedagogical approaches; (K1; K3;)
3 - Reflect systematically on their own professional development through applying models of enquiry; (I3)
4 - Investigate new ideas and reflect on how they can apply them to their professional teaching practice; (K2; I2)
5 - Construct and justify a personal and professional perspective on a specific aspect of educational practice. (I3; I5)

Content:

This module will enhance study completed in PED4472 Introduction to Academic Study.

The aim of the module is to help students develop knowledge and skills related to academic enquiry and to reflect on how these can impact their own learning and development. They will be introduced to the principles of research-informed practice and the influence it can have on professional development for teachers and improved outcomes for children. These principles will be linked to the role of practitioners as enquirers and the process of practitioner enquiry. There will be opportunity to discuss principles of ethical practices and students will engage in deep thinking about a specific area of interest related to their academic and professional development.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lead lectures will be used to introduce core knowledge, concepts, principles and ethical approaches. In workshop/seminar sessions students will explore concepts, principles and ethics related to the process of academic and professional enquiry in more depth.

Further details relating to assessment
A portfolio assessment will include components related to each of the module learning outcomes. One of these components will be a literature review, to support progression to PED6444 Enhancing Practitioner Enquiry.
