On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Examine and reflect on their own progression regarding meeting specific needs (K4; I3)
2 - Recognise the diverse nature of learners and related barriers to learning for all children (K5; P2)
3 - Compare and contrast key pedagogies in meeting the needs of a diverse range of learners, including children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through adaptive and responsive teaching. (K6; E8)
The module looks at how teachers identifying individual needs builds students’ knowledge of approaches or interventions to support specific needs.
Students learn how to prepare lessons/sequences of learning with awareness of common barriers or misconceptions about a topic and with reference to pupils’ prior knowledge.Students will gain an awareness of barriers to learning experienced by children with identified specific additional needs: e.g. physical needs, medical needs, social/emotional/behavioural needs, linguistic needs (English as an additional language); and specific learning differences.
Knowledge of statutory duties in relation to pupils with specific needs will be secured.
Non-Assessed Enhancement
The module includes a placement from a range of settings outside mainstream classrooms. Students will be provided with opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding within a particular area of interest e.g. special school provision, museums education, outdoor learning, international learning and spiritual and cultural retreats.
This module will be delivered on campus, through face-to-face taught lectures, practical workshops and sessions led by experienced professionals/colleagues from school and outside agencies.
