PED5792 - Introducing Practitioner Enquiry

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a critical understanding of national priorities for Early Years and Primary education, including curriculum developments and pedagogical approaches;
Apply knowledge and understanding of the physical, social and intellectual development of children and of the needs of different groups of children;
Reflect systematically and critically on their own professional development through collating, processing and synthesising a range of evidence;
Evaluate new ideas and reflect on how they can apply them to their professional teaching practice;
Justify their own personal and professional perspective on a specific aspect of educational practice, drawing upon key theoretical frameworks.

Content:

The aim of the module is to help students carry out a small-scale enquiry and to reflect on how this can influence their own learning and development. They will be introduced to the principles of evidence-based practice and the impact it can have on professional development for teachers and improved outcomes for children. These principles will be linked to the role of practitioners as enquirers and the process of practitioner enquiry. There will be clear guidance on ethical requirements and expectations in relation to Practitioner Enquiry. Students will have to demonstrate how they will meet these in any enquiry undertaken.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lead lectures will be used to introduce concepts, principles and ethics. Smaller group sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote collaborative and active learning in line with the University's teaching and learning policy. In the smaller group sessions students will explore concepts, principles and ethics related to the process of practitioner enquiry in more depth.
