PED5742 - Developing the Primary Curriculum 1 (5-11)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate subject and primary curriculum knowledge of English, Mathematics, Science, Computing and Physical Education;
2. Understand progression of pupils' learning in the subjects studied;
3. Reflect on resources and approaches to teaching and learning, demonstrating understanding of how these may be applied effectively in school contexts;
4. Produce and appraise, with peers, learning resources appropriate to the age-range studied;
5. Explain theoretical principles of learning in each of the subject areas studied, making links to evaluations of practice.

Content:

The module will build on UG Level 4 SKAP sessions. Students will further their knowledge and understanding of developing, adapting and delivering sequences of learning in English, Mathematics, Science, computing and PE across KS1 and KS2.

Subject knowledge and understanding will underpin students' capacity to break learning down into smaller steps to plan and deliver learning sequences, embedding assessments for formative and summative purposes as per relevant national frameworks and structures.

Students will review and deconstruct published schemes of work including units and documentation written and delivered by partner schools in preparation for school experience and academic assessment.

Links are drawn between subject-specific and age-phase pedagogical design and strategies.

Learning and Teaching Information:

During this module, taught sessions will include lectures, practical workshops and tutorials, with a focus on applying subject knowledge and subject-specific pedagogy to be able to plan sequences of learning in maths, English, science, P.E. and computing. Active and collaborative learning approaches will be used, including through incorporating collaborative group work as well as independent study. Learning will be supported by the University’s VLE (Moodle), where a range of directed tasks will be offered.

Further details relating to assessment

The evaluative report will include a deconstruction of sequences of learning covered in the taught content of the module.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of planning, delivering and evaluating sequences of learning in the context of subject and age-phase curricula.

The module is related to subject knowledge required to meet the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012) and is a professional requirement of the programme.

Other relevant matters

This module will develop students’ relevant subject specific and age phase curriculum knowledge requirements taken from the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework (DfE, 2024) and will be enhanced at Level 6; so that by the end of the programme students can demonstrate they have met the following Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012):

1. Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
2. Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
4. Plan and teach well-structured lessons
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
