PED4512 - Subject and Curriculum (wider)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Explain the importance of secure subject and pedagogical knowledge across the wider curriculum in EYFS, KS1 and KS2. (K1, K3, E6)

2 Explain ethical and value driven requirements within the EYFS and primary curriculum. (I4)

3 Describe basic theoretical principles of learning in the wider curriculum subjects. (I1)

4 Reflect on resources and approaches to teaching and learning, demonstrating understanding of how these may be applied effectively in school contexts. (P2)

Content:

This module introduces students to the relevant foundation subject and curriculum knowledge in the wider curriculum and Religious Education (including statutory and non-statutory subjects/areas of learning), across EYFS and KS1 or KS1 and KS2, subject to age phase specialism.

Module content will also identify current national priorities in these key subject areas, as identified by the DfE, Ofsted and other professional bodies. Students will be introduced to signature pedagogical theory and practice for each subject/area of learning.

The curriculum is co-constructed with school partners providing the opportunity for students to enact practice through school experience.

Learning and Teaching Information:

During this module, taught sessions will include lectures, practical workshops and tutorials, with a focus on applying subject knowledge and subject-specific pedagogy to be able to plan and teach across the Foundation Subjects and Religious Education. Active and collaborative learning approaches will be used, including through incorporating collaborative group work as well as independent study. Learning will be supported by the University’s VLE (Moodle), where a range of directed tasks will be offered.

The content of the poster will justify the role and relevance of two foundation subjects within the primary curriculum.
