On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Describe key theories and principles related to child development; (K4; K5)
2 Explain how to create and manage an effective learning environment including the behaviour of learners and the impact of this on the development of all learners and behaviours for learning; (I1)
3 Reflect upon a range of perspectives of knowledge, understanding and learning and how learners ‘learn more and understand more’ through applied pedagogy in educational settings and how these underpin different understandings of how deep learning happens. (I6)
Students will develop an understanding of child development, knowledge of how pupils learn and the role of memory in learning.
The module includes an introduction to cognitive science and learning theory.
Using the work of current theorists and researchers, students explore how active and working memory support pupils learning more and how the principles of instruction underpin knowledge application.
Reflective practice is used to develop an understanding of teachers' professional attributes and conduct.
Students will examine the role of the teacher in creating and managing an effective learning environment and the interactions that take place therein. They will explore behaviours for learning and the implications for teaching and learning.
Staff will use a variety of delivery methods appropriate to the subject content. Lectures will address big questions on key areas of how we learn and associated workshop sessions will involve students in collaborative, enquiry based interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts.
Digital approximation software will be used for peer and formative feedback on core competencies and professional domains linked to school experience.
Peer study group tasks will support independent learning.
