PED4482 - Introduction to Teaching

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Describe aspects of professional practice and what this looks like in an educational setting (K5, K6)

2 Describe key principles of Safeguarding (P1)

3 Examine roles, responsibilities and practices in an educational setting in relation to Safeguarding; (P1; P2)

Content:

Students will reflect on the professional attributes of a teacher and their own academic and assessment experiences, allowing them to make links between theory and practice. Students will be guided in managing their time effectively, using independent study time and taking responsibility for their professional and academic progress.

Support for reflection will also be provided in taught sessions, exploring and evaluating professional practice issues.

Links will be made across interdisciplinary subjects and content between all level 4 modules.

Students will become familiar with the legal frameworks within which the wider pastoral responsibilities of educational settings are carried out. They will develop an understanding of current Safeguarding guidance (including Prevent and contextual understanding (FGM)).

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures and workshops illustrating professional practices will form part of the provision for this module, providing context for students’ reflections and actions and for the setting of directed tasks.

Use of peer study groups will support independent study and consideration of the links between the different objectives from the taught course, time management skills, progress towards targets set and their developing knowledge, understanding and skills.
