Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate subject and EYFS/primary curriculum knowledge of English, Mathematics, Science/Computing and Physical Education;
Understand fundamental principles of practice and pedagogy specific to EYFS;
Reflect on planning, teaching and assessing individual lessons or learning activities, demonstrating understanding of how this may be applied effectively in EYFS or Key Stage 1 contexts;
Evaluate episodes of own and others' teaching in the areas studied and in relation to professional standards;
Identify potential barriers to learning and begin to understand how these factors might be addressed;
Understand theoretical principles of learning in each of the subject areas studied.

Content:

This module will introduce students to the relevant subject specific and age phase curriculum knowledge requirements of the Core Content Framework (2019) and will be developed at level 5; so that by the end of the programme students can demonstrate they have met the following Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012):

This module enables students to develop knowledge of the prime and core areas of Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics in the EYFS Framework (2012) and National Curriculum (2014). Students will also develop knowledge of science, and computing and physical education curriculum areas.

The module will develop knowledge and understanding of the professional documentation associated with teaching these subject areas in EYFS and KS1. Students will examine key outcomes for pupils in each subject area and evaluate pedagogical approaches and common teaching resources.

A range of models of planning, assessment and organisation of learning in a Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 setting will be demonstrated and explored so that students can begin to make links between theory and practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is taught through a variety of lectures, practical and engaging workshops, creating resource and display opportunities and group presentations, with an emphasis on learning from skilled experienced teachers and our peers.

Students will also attend tutorials and complete a range of directed tasks, some individual and some group, all of which run alongside a focused placement in school.
