PED4332 - Introduction to a Broad and Balanced Curriculum

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate primary curriculum and subject knowledge in areas of the Foundation Subjects, including an understanding of pupils' progression;
Demonstrate an awareness of current national priorities in regard to providing a 'broad and balanced' curriculum in Key Stages 1 and 2;
Understand basic theoretical principles of learning in each subject area studied;
Reflect on resources and approaches to teaching and learning, demonstrating understanding of how these may be applied effectively in school contexts;
Produce and appraise, with peers, learning resources and/or lesson plans appropriate to the age-range studied;
Reflect on and evaluate episodes of own and others' teaching in EYFS or school contexts.

Content:

In this module students will be provided with the opportunity to explore the Foundation Subjects to enable them to begin to develop the pedagogical skills and curriculum knowledge to teach across the Key Stage 1 and 2 Curriculum Subjects. The module will introduce students to curriculum knowledge and basic pedagogical approaches related to all subject areas. Links will be made to PED4312, PED4322, PED4452 and PED4462. This will help students to understand how relationships between all curriculum subjects provide quality educational experiences in primary settings.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Each session will include a variety of approaches to promote active learning to reflect methods utilised in the primary classroom. These will be undertaken as whole group, small group, pair or individually. Other teaching methods may include fieldwork and/or off-site visits.

Further details relating to assessment
The reflective log is a single submission which includes short pieces related to all subject areas studied. This helps students relate theory to practice.

The essay will give students opportunity to explore one subject area in greater depth. This may include evaluations of teaching and learning from experiences as part of Focus Day visits.

Other relevant matters
This module will introduce students to the relevant subject specific and age phase curriculum knowledge requirements of the Core Content Framework (2019) and will be developed at Level 5; so that by the end of the programme students can demonstrate they have met the following Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012):

5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
