PED4322 - Introduction to the Primary Curriculum (5-11) 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate subject and primary curriculum knowledge of English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education;
Reflect on planning, teaching and assessing individual lessons, demonstrating understanding of how this may be applied effectively in school contexts;
Evaluate episodes of own and others’ teaching in the subject areas studied and in relation to professional standards;
Identify potential barriers to learning and begin to understand how these factors might be addressed;
Understand theoretical principles of learning in each of the subject areas studied.

Content:

This module builds on students’ subject knowledge from PED4312 of teaching English, mathematics and science. It also introduces subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches related to Physical Education. National priorities in all subject areas, identified by DfE and Ofsted, will be addressed.

This module is focussed on developing students’ application of subject knowledge to plan, teach and assess individual lessons in each subject area. Students will draw on practical experiences from Immersion experiences throughout PED4302 to discuss and evaluate teaching and learning in each subject area in school settings. This module builds on students’ subject knowledge from PED4312 of teaching English, mathematics and science. It also introduces subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches related to Physical Education. National priorities in all subject areas, identified by DfE and Ofsted, will be addressed.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Taught sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, incorporating integrative assessments and collaborative group work. Learning will be supported by the University’s VLE (Moodle) by resources packs, and through subject related classroom resources. Subject specific activities to be completed during Immersion Days will support students’ ability to relate theory and practice.

Further details relating to assessment
The portfolio will include reflective and evaluative logs, based on immersion experiences, on children’s learning in English, maths, science and computing.

These logs will be shared with peers and tutors as formative assessment opportunities throughout the module.

Ongoing subject knowledge audits for English and maths will be used to self and peer assess.

Other relevant matters
This module will introduce students to the relevant subject specific and age phase curriculum knowledge requirements of the Core Content Framework (2019) and will be developed at Level 5; so that by the end of the programme students can demonstrate they have met the following Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012):

5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils.
