On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Work effectively as a leader to coordinate safe, effective, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care within multidisciplinary teams.
2. Systematically apply a range of assessment, planning, and therapeutic interventions for effective quality care.
3. Critically evaluate your role in service improvement, management, and the effective supervision and education of others in a range of situations.
4. Critically reflect on key concepts of medicines optimisation and nurse prescribing and application of these principles in practice.
5. Make sound professional judgements on the application of different approaches to person centred assessment, planning and evaluation for complex and acute care episodes.
This module will enable you to build upon your experience of nursing practice within contemporary health care settings and through simulation practice education. You will apply your knowledge and skills of leadership and coordination within planned, supervised and assessed placements practising independently with minimal supervision and confidence, alongside supported reflective conversations throughout your practice experiences. Placement inductions will cover policies and protocols relevant to the practice area and will include any IT and systems training/digital technology skills required. The MYEPAD document is designed to support and guide you towards successfully achieving the required criteria set out in the seven platforms and annexe A and B of the Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses and Standards for Education and Training (NMC 2018) for your level of expertise on the chosen field of practice. You are required to demonstrate high standards of professional conduct at all times during your placements. You will work within ethical and legal frameworks and be able to articulate the underpinning values of The Code (NMC, 2018). Professional Values reflect several proficiency statements which are captured under the four sections of The Code: prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety and promote professionalism and trust. You are required to complete the following sections of the e-portfolio MYEPAD; Initial, mid-point and final interviews, Professional values, Episode(s) of care, Stage proficiencies, Medicine management plus your Electronic Ongoing Achievement Record (E-OAR).
Your 11-week Practice 6 will be structured as follows:
Placement 1a - 10 weeks in a relevant health care setting comprising of 375 hours
Placement 1b - 1-week Simulated Practice Education experience comprising 25 hours
Placement 1b will be supported by service users and carer direct involvement, clinical scenarios using standardised patients, manikin patient simulators and immersive digital technologies.
You should engage positively in all practice experience learning opportunities, take responsibility for your own learning and professional development and know how to access support when needed. You will be taught and supervised in accordance with your individual learning needs, proficiency, and confidence. Reflection will inform your on-going professional development and learning via your MYEPAD e-portfolio. Continuous assessment is an integral aspect of learning and teaching in practice, and you are expected to show evidence of consistent achievement during the placement. You will work with and receive written and verbal feedback from a range of staff including practice supervisors and practice assessors. You are required to reflect on your developing knowledge and practice. Practice assessment is structured and recorded within your MYEPAD. You will meet with your practice assessor/supervisor at the start, mid-point, and final week of placements to discuss your individual learning needs and progress. An action plan will be agreed and must be recorded in the MYEPAD at these points. Your practice assessor/supervisor and academic assessor will support and guide you towards successfully achieving the criteria set out in the Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses and Standards for Education and Training (NMC 2018). If you are unable to achieve any standards of proficiency through lack of opportunity, then this must be clearly documented in your Electronic Ongoing Assessment Record (E-OAR).

Further details relating to assessment
Formative assessment of your clinical practice will be facilitated through your mid-placement meeting with your Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor to review your progress and achievements which will be recorded in your MYEPAD. This meeting is an opportunity to identify what is going well and agree any further learning opportunities within an action plan to enhance your successful completion of the module. You will also be provided with one draft opportunity for your reflective essay with feedback provided at least one week prior to summative submission. You will have online access to safeMedicate and unlimited opportunity to complete practice exams prior to your final exam.
(1). Achieve a pass for Practice 6 verified by your practice assessor. Complete all required elements as outlined in the MYEPAD e-portfolio verified by your practice assessor. Please note if you pass this element but have any hours to retrieve you must complete these in the supplementary retrieval period during the final 4 weeks of the academic year.
(2). Online Exam Prescribing Calculations safeMedicate to pass you must achieve 100%.
(3). You will maintain a reflective log in your e-portfolio completing 4 x 300-word reflections (1200 words) and 1 x 800-word reflections (Total 2000 words). Your 800-word reflection should focus on your personal and professional development relating to one of the four themes of The Code (NMC, 2018): prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety and promote professionalism and trust. You will use a reflective model/framework to ensure a systematic approach to your critical reflection, you will consider relevant theories and concepts to develop your future practice and support your writing with academic references from evidence-based literature. Please note that you are only required to write 5 reflective logs across the 11 weeks of Practice 2 (not 5 per placement).
The assessments will allow you to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and proficiencies relevant to Practice 6.
Note that compensation is not permitted. Each assessment component must be passed at a minimum of 40% (NMC regulations), unless otherwise stipulated (for example, Online safeMedicate Exam with requirement to achieve 100% for pass).
