NUR6015 - Preparation for Professional Registration

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Explore and critically appraise strategies to support the transition from student to registered nurse including self-care, resilience, self-management and mindfulness to get the most from preceptorship.

2. Critically reflect on and plan personal and professional development needs for your own transition from student to accountable registered nurse.

3. Develop readiness to undertake the role of practice supervisor including skills to supervise, motivate, support and teach less experienced students and colleagues providing positive and constructive feedback on care delivered.

4. Effectively complete an application for a registered nurse post and conduct a competent interview.

Content:

This module will enable you to explore the transition from student to registered nurse providing you with the ability to recognise your own personal and professional development needs and what to expect from preceptorship. You will critically reflect on your own progression from entering the programme to becoming a values-based leader on exiting the programme and identify key elements of nursing that are meaningful to you and will influence your future practice as a NMC registrant. You will explore key legal, ethical, and philosophical principles under pinning autonomous nursing practice supported by an understanding of role transition theory and human factors of change. You will discuss the need to manage uncertainty and be able to apply strategies to support self-care, resilience, self-management, mindfulness, and organisation, being able to recognise potential burnout in self and others. You will prepare for the role of practice supervisor and consider the communication and relationship skills required to supervise students using different coaching models i.e. GROW and demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of practice supervisor (PS) in supporting student learning in practice, consider a range of equality and diversity needs of students that may impact on learning in practice, discuss the boundaries of the practice supervisor role and the need to feedback to assessors and understand the process for raising concerns regarding students in practice placements. You will explore the role of the nurse in maintaining and measuring quality of care through performance management, service evaluation and audits, health economics, resource allocation and current health policy and be able to develop a basic business case for additional funding. Finally, you will be able to apply for your first registered nurse post and practice and learn skills to successfully complete an interview.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Research informed key lectures will introduce the weekly content of the module identifying theories/principles/concepts from both a specific field and integrated cross-field perspective enabling you to develop your knowledge, skills and application of nursing care across the lifespan. This will be supported by blended learning pre and post session activities on Moodle and you will be expected to engage with a range of activities including pre-reading to prepare you for lectures and follow-on activities to enable ongoing self and tutor assessment of your progress and application of knowledge and skills. Directed study time will support you to critically engage with lecture content and you will work both independently and in small groups. Where appropriate, specialist practitioners and service users and carers will be invited to contribute to sessions to increase the authenticity of lived experience of the module content and highlight employability links. Learning styles will be supported by a variety of resources including videos, reading material, discussion and debate, e-learning modules, problem solving and practical tasks. You will be expected to utilise appropriate digital technologies and study skills to engage with additional resources and in independently directing your own learning.

Further details relating to assessment

Post session activities submitted through Moodle will facilitate ongoing formative assessment opportunities via lecturer or peer feedback, these may include responses to case studies, quizzes, forum posts or blogs and self-assessment. One mock opportunity will be provided for your job interview and a draft opportunity for your job application pack with feedback provided at least one week prior to summative submission.

(1) Online Module (Preparing to be a Practice Supervisor). You will complete the sector standard training to be able to undertake the role of a practice supervisor and submit your certificate of achievement to Turnitin. (Please note you will be able to complete this assessment as part of your directed study time).

(2). Job application and mock interview. You will complete a job application form and CV for a registered nurse post. You will then take part in a mock interview which will potentially include service users and carers and practice learning partners on the interview panel. The interview will last approximately 10 mins.

The assessments will allow you to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of principles, theory and skills required to support your transition from student to registered nurse.

Note that compensation is not permitted. Each assessment component must be passed at a minimum of 40% (NMC regulations), unless otherwise stipulated. Please note that students must adhere to standards of The Code (NMC, 2018) in relation to Prioritising People (5 – Respect people’s right to privacy and confidentiality). As such, any breach of confidentiality in an assessment submission will result in an automatic failure at 0.
