MFC5013 - Film: Relating Theory and Practice

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module is designed to familiarise you with approaches to theorising and researching film.

You will learn how to consider and critically discuss documentary and fiction films, focusing on a range of examples and case studies, historically and within various movements and sub-genres, and practically to apply this learning to the processes of production in the other modules.

You will learn how to identify suitable research topics for your practice and how to engage ethical issues.

Emphasis will be given to consideration of the relationships between theory and practice.

Assigment 1: 15-minute group presentation of the research statement.

Assignment 2: Video Essay – an individual video essay that identifies and critically studies selected research themes and topics analysed in class.

Early Assessment: there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks and this will help unpack the assignment details for the 1st assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.

Assessment:

001 Group presentation; 15 minutes; end of semester 1 40%
002 Video essay; 3,000 words; end of semester 2 60%
