Content:

The aim of this module is to support apprentices by providing them with the vital study skills they will need to successfully negotiate HE. The apprentices will be introduced to academic conventions around writing, note taking, literature searching, presentation skills and referencing. This may include undertaking tasks within the Library and the Learning Hub, being introduced to the VLE being used for the programme and the e-portfolio and guided in the creation of entries to their Learning Journals. The module will also focus on the importance of the apprentices mapping their workplace activities to the knowledge’s, skills and behaviours (KSBs) of their apprenticeship standard building on knowledge gained in BMM4662 Starting your Apprenticeship Learning Portfolio. The focus of their Learning Journal entry will be to reflect upon the knowledge gained throughout the module and how this maps to the apprenticeship standards.

The module will be delivered on a blended learning basis, with the apprentices attending delivery workshops at the start of the module which will provide them with the skills and knowledge to complete all aspects of the module.

The apprentices will also participate in a variety of on-line activities throughout the duration of the module, using the VLE to further develop their academic skills. A virtual workshop will be delivered mid module which will be designed to cover any areas of development which are evident in work produced for component one.

Further details relating to assessment
Working towards the module’s assessment is handled via an essay, presentation and a reflective learning journal. This will allow the apprentice to demonstrate a variety of academic skills through the creation of each component and encourage reflection upon practice in the workplace. The analytical reflection will focus on personal learning that has taken place within the module. Summative assessment is given on these tasks.

The presentation will enable the apprentices to develop their presentation and communication skills which will be vital to their professional and academic development. The presentation will be submitted mid module, this will allow the apprentices to reflect upon their performance to contribute to the reflective learning journal which will be submitted at the end of the module. The essay will enable the apprentices to demonstrate their academic skills which will include academic research, ability to analyse, critical thinking and referencing. The reflective learning journal will allow the apprentice to reflect on the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed within the module and apply this knowledge to evidence the KSB’s from their apprenticeship standards. Formative feedback is offered throughout the workshops and related to the activities undertaken. This will be done via formal sessions and online interactions on the VLE and the use of tools such as email and Microsoft Teams (or equivalent)
