MFC4203 - Television Industries

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The module covers the development of television from a predominantly UK historical position. It includes an introduction to the development of the principles of public service broadcasting, with reference to key individuals and government committees. The module introduces the theoretical models applied to the study of the television industry and its products and places these in their appropriate social, cultural and economic contexts. Students will examine and analyse a variety of texts and other sources of information on, analysis of, and opinion about television.

Assessment 1 is a 3,000-word portfolio made up of three elements (each 1,000 words or equivalent in length) relating to Semester 1 workshop topics.

Assessment 2 is either a 2,000-word academic essay relating to a Semester 2 topic or a 10-minute individual presentation supported by accompanying visual material, e.g. PowerPoint or Prezi.

Assessment 3 is a 1,000-word TV criticism on a screening of your choice from Semester 2.

Early Assessment:there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks and this will help unpack the assignment details for the 1st assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.
