LAW4023 - Legal Skills and Employability

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will provide an introduction to the Legal Skills that are the backbone of any legal professional’s career. The following skills will be focused on:

Academic Research Skills
Statutory and Caselaw Interpretation Skills
Employability Skills
Legal Writing and Drafting Skills
Presentation Skills
Courtroom Skills and Mooting.

This module is intended to be aligned with the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) areas of fundamental knowledge; specifically, SQE topics 17,18,19,20 relating to Case and matter analysis; Legal research; Legal writing; Legal drafting.

Further details relating to assessment
The summative assessment will be supplemented with formative assessment throughout the module. Students will be given the opportunity to engage with practical tasks and both tutor assessed feedback and peer assessed feedback will be provided ensuring students are fully prepared for their summative assessments.

There is an integrated assessment occurring at the end of Level 4 which takes the form of a case study based on subject matter in the modules listed below. The vehicle for learning mooting skills will be this module.

Skills will be applied from two modules: LAW4033 Public Law and LAW4023 Legal Skills and Employability.

This will give the students an opportunity throughout the year to develop a holistic perspective on the programme level learning outcomes and their own development in reference to them as legal professionals.

Assessment Component 002 Professional Challenge Project/ Work Placement must be passed in line with University requirements.

Condonement for LLB Law students is permissible only when all conditions are met in the Bachelor of Laws Additional Regulations in the TPAR.

001 Coursework; 2,000 words; end of semester 1 40%
002 Professional challenge/work placement; 20 hours challenge or 2 week (50hr) placement; end of semester 2 %
003 Reflective Statement; 2,500 words; end of semester 2 professional development block 40%
004 Integrated assessment oral court hearing; 15 minutes; end of semester 2 20%
