Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.
This module is aimed at students who want to obtain shorthand to enhance their employability. The module will teach shorthand note-taking with the aim of reaching speeds of 60-100wpm.
The module aims to get students to attain the NCTJ shorthand diploma module demanded by news employers.
BA Hons Journalism students who opt to take the NCTJ Court Reporting exam (which is optional) must also choose this Shorthand module as their option for study at Level 6. This is a condition of PSRB accreditation.

Further details relating to assessment
Exams may take place throughout Semester 2, according to when students are ready to attempt at 60wpm followed up by a 100wpm exam. Exact exam dates will follow the NCTJ timetable.
In line with NCTJ industry standards, students should aim to reach shorthand speeds of 100 wpm. The following marking scheme will therefore apply for module assessment:
0-30% Can write fewer than 20 letters of shorthand alphabet
30-40% Can write only 20-25 letters of shorthand alphabet
40-50% Can write the full shorthand alphabet and 30-40 common words in shorthand
50-60% Can transcribe 240 words at 60wpm with only a few errors
60-70% Can transcribe 240 words at 60wpm almost word for word
70-80% Can transcribe 300 words at 100wpm with a moderate number of errors
80-90% Can transcribe 300 words at 100wpm with only a few errors
90-100% Can transcribe 300 words at 100wpm almost word for word
The University module grading will be assessed based on internal examinations. Students on BA Hons Journalism will also be eligible to sit NCTJ shorthand assessments. Students on other programmes may also be eligible to sit NCTJ assessments; this will be based upon the PSRB standards and agreements with Leeds Trinity University.
Early Assessment: there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks and this will help unpack the assignment details as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.
