JOU6043 - PR and Promotions

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module introduces students to the practice of Public Relations and Promotions. The context of PR & Promotions in Journalism & the media is examined. Practical aspects of PR are explored: the techniques and methods used by industry professionals. It addresses communication techniques including: news releases, media relations, events and social network and digital promotions. Practical PR skills are developed in teamwork, producing a portfolio and a presentation. There is an emphasis on Work-related Learning: e.g. working on real-life case studies, with business partners and industry guest speakers.

Further details relating to assessment

Portfolio: students will receive formative feedback on work produced throughout the module in order to submit a portfolio of summative work. Further details of the portfolio content will be included in the module handbook.

Group Presentation: students work as a group to produce a PR presentation but will be assessed on their individual contribution.

Early Assessment: there will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks and this will help unpack the assignment details for the 1st assignment as well as guide and inform student preparation and help introduce the University grading system.

Assessment:

001 PR portfolio; equiv to 2,500 words; end of semester 1 50%
002 Group presentation; 15 mins+Q&A; end of semester 2 50%
